Raising Bad Hands Before the Flop

Small Bet-Sizing When Being Ahead

Because mediocre players cannot read the board or their opponents, they do not always recognize when they are ahead. This offense is severe when the offender is the last to place a bet after the turn. Everyone checks, and the offender bets a non-threatening amount despite making top pair with a kicker or two pairs. Everyone calls, and eventually, someone hits or draws. The culprit then says something like, “I won this hand to the river.”

Overbetting the Nuts

It drives me crazy to see someone who has lost big hit the nuts or very close to them on the flop and then go all-in, kicking everyone out of the pot without losing anything. Bad players can get too excited when they win good cards and don’t want to lose the hand. However, if you have a hand that you think is likely to beat the other players, that doesn’t make them lose the hand. You want them to win something they can use to build the pot.
